The chart stacks every Reddit citation we recorded per day, by engine.
The Perplexity bars run near 500 a day through most of July, roughly double to about 1,000 a day at the end of the month, and stay high even after Aug 14, settling near 750 to 800 a day. The ChatGPT segment holds steady near 250 a day through Aug 7, dips to about 130 a day over Aug 8-13, then collapses to roughly 15 a day from Aug 14 onward. Gemini stays a thin, flat band throughout.
Same source, same window, opposite directions. If Reddit had lost trust everywhere, every engine would have moved together. They did not. ChatGPT changed how it retrieves; Reddit stayed the same source it was on Aug 7.
5. Why ChatGPT Fell Off a Cliff
ChatGPT's August drop had a single, identifiable trigger, and it is not on Reddit's side. For three weeks, ChatGPT held Reddit steady near 250 citations a day. Then a slide on Aug 8 to about 130 a day, and a cliff on Aug 14 to 16 a day, a 94% collapse in under a week. Gemini in the same week stayed flat, which isolates the cause to ChatGPT's retrieval layer.
The mechanism is the fan-out query. When ChatGPT answers a question, it issues many sub-queries to gather evidence. In early August, those sub-queries started carrying site: operators and qualifier-heavy phrasing (best, reviews, 2026, vs). A site:-qualified query is a directed fetch: it pulls from a named domain or a constrained set, and a broad Reddit thread that once satisfied the head query no longer matches the narrowed sub-query. So Reddit drops out of the candidate pool before ranking even happens.
This is why the decline looks instant rather than gradual. Retrieval behavior changed on a threshold, not a slope, and the citation share followed within the same daily window. The Aug 8 dip and the Aug 14 collapse mark the two stages we measured: first a broadening of site: use in fan-out sub-queries, then the threshold crossing that removed Reddit from the pool.

Perplexity is the counter-trend. Reddit citations from Perplexity rose from about 512 a day in early July to about 988 a day in early August, a 93% increase, and they stayed near 736 a day even in the week after ChatGPT's cliff. The rise came in a visible step: Perplexity ran near 400 to 500 a day through late July, then roughly doubled to about 1,000 a day starting Jul 31 and held there. Across the full window, it supplied 31,640 of the 44,488 Reddit citations we tracked, 71% of the total. That is not a source that lost trust: it is a source that gained share while ChatGPT walked away.
Where ChatGPT's cliff was a sudden retrieval switch, Perplexity's is a continued bet on Reddit as a first-person source. It visits about ten pages per answer and cites three or four, and Reddit threads keep satisfying that model. The ChatGPT story is the event; the Perplexity story is the counter-evidence that Reddit itself did not degrade.
